The predecessors of the competition Environment-Friendly Enterprise of the Year are the contest TOP Environment-Friendly Enterprises organized at the initiative of the Ministry of the Environment in 2001, 2003 and 2005, and the contest Environmental Award for Business (Keskkonnategija) organized in 2007–2011 in order to determine the most environment-friendly organizations.
